Fundamentals of Biological Science I

Welcome to the BIO 121
Course Design Toolkit

Course Description

This course is designed for science majors. An examination of three areas of contemporary biological science including selected topics in chemistry necessary as background for cell biology, the structure and function of cells with emphasis on reproduction, membrane functions, and cell energetics, and the molecular mechanisms of genetic control and patterns of inheritance. Three class hours and two laboratory hours a week.

Outcome 1

Students will explain the process of science and identify the tools necessary for different types of scientific discovery

Outcome 2

Students will identify the structural and functional characteristics of organic and inorganic molecules and describe their interactions in living cells

Outcome 3

Students will describe and identify basic characteristics, functions, and components of prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells

Outcome 4

Students will compare the processes of cell division, specifically mitosis and meiosis

Outcome 5

Students will compare the biochemical pathways that are central to cellular energetics in terms of energy production, location, and process

Outcome 6

Students will demonstrate the principles of Mendelian and molecular genetics and describe their relationship to one another.
