Basic Writing Skills

Welcome to the ENG 090
Course Design Toolkit

Course description: This course is for students who need to improve their ability to express themselves in writing and to accomplish common writing tasks. Basic principles of spelling, punctuation, usage, sentence structure, paragraph, and essay development are stressed. Small group instruction supplements classroom activity.

ENG 090 can be a challenging class to teach, particularly when students who enter the class are not comfortable with writing to begin with. Instructors are encouraged to utilize instructional approaches that emphasize essay development through multi-drafted revision process. Tools to facilitate this process mentioned in this Toolkit revolve around instructor and peer feedback that encompass the use grading rubrics. The rubrics mentioned here are meant to guides. You may create your own, or use one referred to in the Toolkit located on the iRubric website.
